Alright kids. Brace yourselves. This is the first installment of "Haha Asks," a series of questions designed to help get me through this year, with answers provided by you all-knowing, experienced graduates!
This week's question: What did you wish you knew about thesis in the fall semester?
I have that sinking feeling of freewheeling unpreparedness, now that it's September, and I can't shake it. Please advise since no one else seems capable.
...and Happy Labor Day. Remember how hard people fought for the 8hr workday with benefits. Don't let new bosses cheat you of these. And also remember that Article 24 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says: "Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay." And how.

do an independent study in the fall that will conveniently translate into a chapter of your thesis...also a 8x10 glossy of bruce mounted on your locker door is equally helpful.
figure all that formatting crap out early! though it may take a day and a half, meet with john to make sure you have it set up right. and keep it simple! you don't graduate any faster with a flashy thesis!
you'll be fine. you're haha!
speaking as a semi-professional librarian - locate and research your interlibrary loan books first because sometimes they take a long time to arrive and then shockingly fast they want them back!
Also, set goals and then take a few days off when you meet them. Otherwise you will go mad.
remember you dont have to write about anything you dont want to write about - its your thesis, own it!
things i learned:
DO NOT let anyone talk you into a topic. the one i didn't do would have been better and directly relevant to what i'm doing now.
sit down and do something. it doesn't matter what, there's always something you could be working on, clarifying, expanding, checking, and it needs to be done in the end, so why not now? Brilliance comes when it comes. In the meantime, just do something. Write drunk and edit sober if necessary. This is how to write a thesis in a month, by the way.
leave so much more time than you'd think for printing and formatting, and turn off the option that skips spell check on all caps, unless you want to get your title page signed twice.
don't forget you have a life. go out and do things. spending all of your time on thesis will kill you and it.
have a muse.
You guys are all so wise! Thank you for these insights.
